How to Invite New People into Your Online Community Without Being ‘Spammy’

Answering the question:  How do I get people into my Facebook business page if they aren’t already my Facebook friends?

There are two separate questions to answer here:

  • How to invite people to my Online Community when they are not already friends/connections
    • In this case (Facebook).
  • When to invite people to my Online Community Online when they are not already friends/connections
    • For all Social Media Communities

How to invite people to my Online Community when they are not already friends/connections

The first is simply the mechanics of inviting someone you are not already connected with – in this case Facebook’s internal “Invite” buttons for easy invitation to connections.  In other words, Facebook has easy buttons, links, abilities to invite individuals to your existing Facebook Pages or Groups.

This works the same way for ANY community online or social space.

A – Each Facebook Page or Group has its own unique link
             – copy the unique link.

B – Send them the invitation:

  • Send them an invite and simply include the Facebook Page or Group link for easy access:
  • Send them a DM (Direct Message) within the social platform (i.e. Facebook)
  • Send them an email with the information and link: if you have permission (i.e. email CASL rules)
  • Create a social media invitation post
  • Include the invitation/link on your Thank You Page for when people sign up for your program/services/challenges
  • Include the invitation/link in an automated email for when people sign up for your program/services/challenges

When to invite people to my Online Community when they are not already friends/connections

The second question is more complex and requires more steps.

To receive a higher conversion rate, invite others into your community online spaces only after you’ve demonstrated your value

People are already inundated with messages. They’ve been invited to so many Facebook groups & pages, events, and other community online spaces, why should they join another?

Make it all about them.

If you make your invitation all about you and what you offer, they’ve heard it all before. If you ask them to join/like/subscribe without first providing value it comes off as you being ‘spammy’, and far fewer people will accept your invitation.

Provide value!

If you provide or demonstrate value first, now you have the opportunity to ask – and they are more receptive to seeing the benefits of belonging to your community.

Only by first experiencing the value you provide, will they join/like/subscribe to your online communities when you invite them to join.  You have made yourself more appealing.

Consider all the opportunities you have to provide value:

  • Have a free gift
  • Offer a free lead magnet
  • Give an interview
  • Speak
  • Write an article/create a video
  • Offer a webinar/seminar
  • Comment online with your expertise
  • Give expert advice when asked
  • Solve someone’s problem
  • And many more…

Now that you have their full attention, when they are most receptive and trust that you are an expert in your field, now offer them more by giving them your invitation to join you in your online community.

What else may be a good Online Community?
Your Facebook Groups, Facebook Page, LinkedIn group, Mailing List, Newsletter, or Lead Magnet (my favourite – where they can Get a Gift: Give an Email) are just a few.

Much success to you!
